ĀTEA A RANGI - STAR COMPASS
The Ātea a Rangi is located in the Waitangi Regional Park.
This project was a three year long collaboration between the Ātea Trust and the Hawke's Bay Regional Council. The actual site of the Ātea a Rangi has a much longer history spanning back to the first discoverers of Aotearoa. Learn more about project, its stake holders and sponsors.
The main purpose for building the Ātea a Rangi was to ensure that the art of Whakatere waka (traditional navigation) is passed on to other generations. This is done in a traditional learning environment of wananga to a select few who sail and crew waka throughout Te Moana nui a Kiwa (Pacific Ocean)
